ROOBI STARLA GASKINS
APRIL 29 - MAY 10

" I am currently working to expand a project titled “Black (W)hole Theories” into a larger scale performance study inclusive of movement and textile creations. During this residency I hope to further excavate a portion of my study that looks towards ideas of the underground, via hip hop and deep house music (Ka like flows and Larry Heard type-sounds respectively), as entryways to self-express, self-define, challenge, root, embrace collective consciousness, and ultimately work to continue liberating the complexities of blackness beyond the confines often prescribed to it. I hope to further develop our movement vocabulary, making abstract and geometric movement patterns using elements of table tennis, and collaborating with dancers and non-dancers on the new iteration of the series. Moving Artist in Residence

VALENTINA BACHÉ RODRÍGUEZ
JUNE 10 - 21

" My ongoing research focuses on durational exercises, such as spinning for hours without stopping and reaching trance states that quiet the hectic, guilt-ridden, and unloved parts of myself. What practices does the body need to sustain long years of resisting oppression? I am guided by Mayan Zapatista's fierce models of how language (movement) can give way to prioritizing the collective heart's health above anything else. Practicing a readiness to defend autonomy and rejecting being paralyzed by fear while having the tools to always act from a place of love. "

Each movement will feature one of nine artworks and come to life through music and motion. Each piece will highlight an aspect of the human experience, with lyrics and dance supporting the artist's original intent. Nine artists. Nine composers. Nine choreographers. One GMCW."

FREE Moving Artist Residency Class

Open Community Class with Gallim Parent Moving Artist Resident, Chitra Subramanian

Blending her deep passion for Hip Hop with her roots in Bharathanatyam, DC-based artist Chitra Subramanian creates to tell stories, build relationships, and explore belonging and anchoring.  Chitra's class - open to all levels and experiences - continues to ask:  What is needed for people in our everyday communities to thrive, connect, and feel seen?  How do we revitalize and reimagine the institutions we regularly participate in - including dance spaces - to become vessels of transformation that we carry in our day-to-day lives? Utilizing the movement languages of Classical dance and Hip Hop culture, Chitra is excited to share new concepts and choreography for her developing work-in-progress and connect with new movers.

" My current research takes a broader look at the power of institutions to create change, as well as the devastating consequences when vibrant institutions are missing or failing. This residency will allow me to explore the stories I am currently collecting as it relates to connection, disconnection, and reimagination. My aim is to utilize this time to grapple with concepts, stories, and improvisation work that lead to a movement framework for this research. "

" I’m currently working on a new evening-length work, dhoka/Betrayal/, which entangles Hindu goddess Kali’s ultimate power with present-day ethnonationalism and religious violence. Focusing on how Hinduism has been colonized into propaganda for violence against dark-skinned bodies and Muslims, I trace Kali's forced transformation into a fetishized, destructive image that upholds this violence with her bloodied tongue. With the Moving Artist Residency, I’ll be puzzling through the last piece of the narrative, where Kali and her disciple let punishment and forgiveness become the other. "

Teen Arts Week

Teen Arts Week is NYC’s only citywide celebration of the arts for teens.

The festival will run from March 11 – 17, 2024.

Launched by 92NY’s Teen Producers in 2019, Teen Arts Week celebrates the best of arts programing for teens around NYC! In collaboration with leading cultural organizations in all five boroughs, Teen Arts Week offers a full schedule of free classes, workshops, and performances for teens all over the city. These events enable teens to gain hands-on experience in different areas of the arts, engage with professionals in the creative industries, and explore pathways to future leadership within the context of the arts. See our growing list of participating organizations below.

The festival features free daytime, after-school, and weekend cultural events in areas such as art-making, literary arts, music, dance, theater, film & media, and college/career readiness. A full list of festival offerings will be available on Wednesday, January 31. Registration for Teen Arts Week events will be open to anyone 14-18 with a valid school ID.

In anticipation of the festival, 92NY will be hosting the Teen Arts Week Ramp-up Event on Wednesday, February 28 at 10:30 am – 1 pm. We encourage school groups to attend as a field trip to learn more about the festival and the participating organizations who will be represented on-site at 92NY, see exciting live arts in our concert hall, and celebrate the recipients of our Teen Arts Week Community Artist Award. This award recognizes creative New York City teens who have made a significant contribution to their local community through the arts. Five teens, one from each borough, will receive the award and a monetary prize of $500. Click the button below to nominate a teen in your network. Parent Moving Artist in Residence

LINS DERRY
virtual residency

" I have long reckoned with the tension between artistic and procedural processes, even before I learned how to code. For example, as a solo artist, I experimented tirelessly with systematic routines until peak performance was clock-work; my warmups were akin to algorithms. And more recently, through an iterative process of discovering how machine vision "sees" and Artificial Intelligence (AI) "understands" choreographed movement, I've developed a method for procedurally choreographing movement vocabularies that fit into both binary and body worlds. This came about when designing a choreographic interface requiring gestures for zoom in/out, scroll up/down, select, span, switch hands, and refresh. Another example is how I convert datasets into scores that can be both danced and visualized as graphs. Thus my choreographic research often extends beyond the studio. During the residency, I plan to return to the Marley to kinesthetically ask: "Given our physical indivisibility from our data-driven world, how can embodied practices like dance help us to navigate complex information and the issues that it produces?"
