A new dance film by Andrea Miller and Ben Stamper, adapted from Miller’s acclaimed work for stage BOAT (2016), explores what it looks like, feels like, and means to be searching for home. BOAT was commissioned by Northrop Auditorium at the University of Minnesota and premiered online on November 19, 2020.Ben Stamper scored the film to the music of Arvo Pärt, which was recorded live in August by our Minnesota partners, the PopUp Coir and Organist Dean Billmeyer. Performed by Allysen Hooks, Christopher Kinsey, Sean Lammer, Taylor Stanley, Haley Sung, and Georgia Usborne.
"we wanted our North to be that connection is deeply fundamental to us, and the loss of that is tragic. Losing someone, or being pulled apart is one of the biggest strains in life. MoRE THAN EVER, NOW is a time where the significance and impact of connection is very clear to us all.” - (Andrea Miller)

Commissioned by New York City Ballet for their Digital Fall Season, new song premiered on October 29, 2020. Performed by New York City Ballet dancers: Harrison Coll, Unity Phelan, Indiana Woodward, and Sebastien Villarini-Velez. Choreography by Andrea Miller, Directed by Ezra Hurwitz, Director of Photography Jon Chema, Music by Victor Jara (“Manifesto”), Produced by Stephani DeLuca, with Creative Assistant Haley Sung.
"Nevertheless, on this fall morning, something lively and strange was happening. The dancers stepped onto the pool’s concrete floor, scattered with good-luck pennies, like explorers toeing virgin terrain. Instead of pointe shoes, they wore waterproof booties, the kind used by windsurfers. The water came up to their calves. They were pleased to find that the bottom wasn’t slippery; one dancer noted that it had a “sandpapery grip.” The choreographer Andrea Miller waded in after them. “One small step for man,” she said, through a blue paisley mask. “One giant leap for New York City Ballet.”"

Commissioned by Ballet Hispánico in June, 2020, Andrea Miller and filmmaker Ben Stamper created this short dance film in collaboration with BH company members Chris Bloom and Gabrielle Sprauve, who danced (and filmed) the work. Music by Nicola Cruz.
Notes on Gathering premiered on August 24th, 2020. It was selected by the Guggenheim Museum to share with its Instagram followership of 2.5M+ people and was included in the New York Times list of 7 Things to Do This Weekend. Presented by First Republic Bank. Co-presented by Grace Farms, CT, Northrop, Peak Performances @ Montclair State University, and Pennsylvania Ballet.
“This film is our little collection of approximations on how to stay human as long as possible. It’s a desperate love letter to the subconscious in a time of hellish pragmatism.”
— Ben Stamper, Director
A commission from First Republic Bank about the creative process during quarantine, which was adapted into a corporate offsite workshop coaching nonprofessional artists in new approaches to creativity and inspiration.
“Throughout this year I've been observing that it is in the absence of making dances that I can see the shape of the elusive routines, practices and sensations that compose my creative process. Here is my attempt at making sense of it.”
- Andrea Miller
